This week I got in the beta for Flagship Studios new game Mythos and I must say that I’m truly impressed with what they have so far… especially considering the game will be free to play and that it has barely clocked in at 10% done.

I started an Elite Hardcore character earlier this week.

When you play on Elite the map is harder, the monsters are harder to kill, and the loot is better.

When you play on Hardcore once you die the game is over.

When you play on Elite Hardcore you get both of those rolled in to one.

I knew how important it was to keep my character fully stocked on healing and mana potions to keep him up and walking.

I started to get careless the further I progressed in to a higher level dungeon though as I played and started bashing the barrels as I often do to see if they had any copper in them or items.

Previously I had hit barrels and they’d sometimes explode and my character would take damage and after a rather epic fight for my level I decided to bash some barrels while my HP slowly ticked up as to not use another expensive potion.

It was with the third barrel smash at my low HP I realized the mistake I had made.

I hit a trapped barrel and lost my little remaining HP.

The game greeted me with the friend message, “You have perished” and a button that simply read “Exit”.

I clicked on the button to be taken back to the character selection screen where my once great Elite Hardcore player stood looking at me with his Legendary staff and a look that he still lived.

The tombstone next to his name however said otherwise.

I could no longer play him. While I knew that was the risk, and I knew that it would eventually happen it still saddened me to think it did happen, and so soon.

I have been talking with Taylor at Flagship Studios the past several days and told him the tale of my death from a barrel to which he told me my character was going to be immortalized in the game manual they were putting together with a warning to not get click happy on the barrels.

So the good news out of the situation is that the character pictured above and his name will forever be immortalized in the Mythos game manual along with the story about how he was pwned by a barrel.

I don’t do New Years Resolutions.

I have made the following commitments to 2008 though.

1. To not blog once each daily, weekly, or monthly but to blog when I feel I have something to share or say. I don’t want to post crap each day just because I said I’d post every single day.
2. With that thought in mind I do promise to give my blog some much needed attention though.
3. To quit smoking once and for all.
4. To make at least five new close friends this year.
5. To play Age of Conan to the maximum level.
6. To stop playing World of Warcraft as much.
7. To reach the maximum level in Mythos before the next beta server wipe.
8. To drop at least ten pounds.
